A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE PLUS A $50.00 GIFT CERTIFICATE

6 Aug

Hello, Former Students and Clients!

Do you remember those application essays that “nailed it,” the proposal that brought you exactly what you wanted, the perfect wording for your website and advertising copy? How about the “killer” résumé that got you that interview?

Perhaps you’re one of the SAT, GRE, or GMAT test takers whose scores increased by 80-240 points or whose ACT improvement by 6-8 points put you over the top. Maybe you’re one of the graduate students whose committee finally accepted your master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation?

OR, were you a student in one of my classes whose reading comprehension soared, essays earned B+ to A, and whose improved note-taking skills still helps you capture every important word or idea? Remember the quality of support Joyce Singer and WriteRight! provided.

REDEEMING YOUR GIFT. . . . .

Through November 1, for each referral you, or one of your contacts, makes to any student; entrepreneur; corporation, or thesis or dissertation writer who then engages our services, WriteRight! is offering a fifty-dollar ($50.00) gift certificate at your favorite restaurant. OR, we will make a donation (in your name) to your chosen school or charity. Your gift, or thank-you notice accepting your donation, will arrive shortly after your referrals remit payment for a minimum of four contact hours.  (Skype and FaceTime sessions available)

So, while you’re thinking of it, tell your friends and acquaintances to visit www.joycesinger.com for contact information and to learn how we can help them shine on paper, get into that first-choice school, write business-related documents that get results, or perfect their thesis/dissertation.

I look forward to learning about your favorite “hot-spots”!

Spring into Fall — Are you wishing you could call your application essays “a wrap”?

3 Aug

If you’re anything like me, you’re wondering what happened to July— Only six weeks ago, days of fun and relaxation and time without a care in the world promised a long vacation.  But time, she is a-fugiting, so I offer a friendly wake-up call.

What will you answer in a few short weeks when someone asks, “So, what did you do this summer?”  Yup, you went sailing, or rowing, or to the Vineyard, visited your grandparents, and caught up with your cousins. Perhaps you had an internship, worked with kids, beefed up your community service, read a bit, traveled cross-country, “vegged” for a while, and caught up on your sleep.

Wouldn’t you love to say, “My college essays are a wrap”?  or, “I’m putting the finishing touches on my college essays”? or, “I feel so much better about applying to graduate school”?

Wouldn’t you like to believe you’re more accomplished than you thought, or that you DO have exciting ideas, or that you CAN contribute to campus life at your favorite college or university?

School starts in three weeks!  You still have time to work on your applications without the pressure of classes, after-school practice, or the extracurricular groups you promised to support.

Appointments fill quickly, so finalize yours now that you’re thinking about it.  Skype and FaceTime sessions also available.

Visit www.joycesinger.com for more information, detailed descriptions of services, and student/parent testimonials

Productivity or Procrastination? Tackling Those College Apps

10 Oct

Use the Columbus Day Weekend to further your goals!

Deadline dates loom.  Some friends completed their essays during the summer. Others have just about finished theirs.  What about YOU?

Do you know where your time goes?

  • Are you just too social?
  • Do you spend excessive amounts of time on Facebook or texting your friends?
  • Do you REALLY care what others tweet about?
  • Worse, does one or more of your friendships sap your energy or challenge your self-esteem and keep you thinking, thinking, thinking?
  • What about the opposite sex?  Do you spend too much time thinking about getting, or FORgetting, him or her?

 Your problem? P-R-O-C-R-A-S-T-I-N-A-T-I-O-N!!!

Now, what are you going to do about it?

MY PLAN (for me)

  1. Take an Internet sabbatical.  Resolve not to check personal e-mail.
  2. Turn off the cell phone. Anyone who needs to talk to me has my home telephone number.
  3. Identify one evening and one day for pure relaxation.
  4. Find a hidden corner in the public library.  Productivity increases to the tenth power!
  5. Just get started.  It feels soooooo good!

I don’t mind if you copy my plan, but please let me know what happens.

February ACT Score Release PLUS Some Advice

24 Feb

To all juniors (and parents) waiting anxiously for the results of the February 11 exam:

Multiple-choice test scores will be available online Monday, Feb. 27.  If your return to school that day marks the end of Winter Recess, you have two reasons to get into gear!

ONE – Second semester has started, and you’ve already met new teachers for some courses and received new syllabi. Even if you have year-long courses, you have a new opportunity to increase your GPA.

ADVICE – If you have not yet done so, take out your planner, and fill in important due dates and test schedules.  If you participate in a team sport, you also should have received the practice schedule and game dates. Add those to your planner as well.  Now, add YOUR schedule. Yes, I mean the dates on your social calendar.  Notice how much time you do have to study!

TWO – You now have your scores from both the January SAT and the February ACT.  Now what?

ADVICE – It is time to ask yourself some questions and to make some decisions.

  • Where did you earn the highest scores?
  •  Which exam do you prefer?
  • Which one will you target?
  • Are you going to take one, or both, again in the spring?
  • Which exam dates best fit into your schedule?  [SAT – March 10, May 5, June 2; ACT – April 14, June 9 ]
  • Do you have enough time to prepare for these tests?
  • Do you prefer to study during the summer months and take the test(s) again in the fall?

Decisions, decisions, decisions!  Revisit my blog post of January 30 to help you make them.

Mind your manners!

9 Feb

Remember your parents’ warnings?  You paid attention, didn’t you?

Here’s my advice for today: Mind your fingers! With texting and e-mails  flying in cyberspace,  it’s far  too easy to slip into text-spelling mode when sending important messages.

AND, check your message one last time before you hit Send.  The auto-correct feature may do just the opposite.  It JUST happened to me!!!!!!  For real!  I typed “feature” earlier in this paragraph and it auto-corrected to “feather tire,” which makes absolutely NO sense unless, of course, you’re a bird flying a bi-plane!

Ciao for now–

Tips for Today!

31 Jan

Today, I edited the work of a brilliant, highly accomplished female executive.  Here’s the tip I shared with her:  The point of your sentence should come last for emphasis.  In  following this advice and reworking her sentences, the revisions resulted in an astounding difference in her writing!

Also, once again I am reminded of the importance of knowing one’s purpose, understanding the audience, and searching for precise words to drive home a message.
